The main door is the one part of a home that every visitor touches. It sets the tone before anyone sees the living room, it has to stand up to sun and monsoon rain on one side and air conditioning on the other, and it carries the lock that keeps the family safe.
In many Indian homes it also carries meaning. Main doors are often chosen with Vastu in mind, decorated for festivals and blessed on the day of griha pravesh. That is a good reason to choose the design carefully rather than accept whatever the builder fitted.
Here is how to choose a main door for a Bangalore flat or independent house: materials, designs, sizes, hardware and costs.
Standard main door sizes
Most Indian main doors are 3 to 3.5 feet wide and 7 feet high (about 900 to 1050 mm by 2100 mm). Wider doors of 4 feet suit independent houses and villas, and double doors of 5 to 6 feet suit larger entrances.
In apartments the opening is fixed by the builder, so the design has to work within it. In an independent house you can size the door and frame together during construction, which is the time to make it generous if you want a grand entrance.
The frame matters as much as the shutter. A solid hardwood or engineered frame at least 4 by 2.5 inches holds hinges and locks properly. A weak frame is the most common reason main doors sag and stop locking cleanly.
Main door materials
Solid teak is the traditional choice in Bangalore and across South India. It is heavy, strong, resists termites better than most woods and can be carved and polished. It is also the most expensive option and needs seasoning; poorly dried teak can warp in the monsoon.
Other hardwoods such as sal, sheesham and hardwood blends cost less than teak and work well with a good finish.
Engineered doors use a solid core with a veneer or laminate face. They are more stable than solid wood, less likely to warp and cheaper, and with a teak veneer they look very close to solid teak.
Steel and metal security doors are increasingly common in apartments. They are strong and fire-resistant and are available with wood-grain finishes, though they feel less warm to the touch.
WPC doors are waterproof and termite-proof, which makes them good for bathrooms. For a main door, they lack the strength and weight most people expect.
Main door design ideas
A carved teak door with traditional motifs, such as a lotus, a kalash or a temple frame, suits homes with a traditional or Kerala and Karnataka style interior. Keep the carving to panels so it is easy to clean.
A plain teak or veneer door with deep horizontal or vertical grooves gives a modern look and works in almost any apartment corridor.
A door with brass or metal inlay, such as thin strips or a geometric pattern, adds detail without carving and catches the light in a dim corridor.
A pivot door, which turns on a pin set in from the edge rather than on side hinges, suits villas and independent houses with wide openings. It needs a heavy-duty floor pivot and a level floor.
A double door with one fixed leaf and one opening leaf gives a wide entrance for moving furniture while keeping daily use simple.
A door with a side panel of fluted glass or a window beside it brings light into a dark foyer. Use toughened or laminated glass, and pair it with a safety grill.
Plan doors, stairs and the facade together.
Locks and hardware
A good main door deserves a good lock. A mortise lock with a deadbolt is the minimum. Multi-point locks, which lock into the frame at several points, are stronger.
Digital locks with a PIN, fingerprint and app access are popular in Bangalore apartments, especially for families with children coming home from school or with domestic help. Choose one with a mechanical key backup and a battery warning, and fit it on a solid door at least 40 mm thick.
Add a door viewer or a video door phone, a door closer if the door is heavy, and a stopper so the handle does not hit the wall.
Finishes and Bangalore weather
Main doors in apartment corridors are mostly protected, but doors in independent houses face direct sun and rain. Use a PU or exterior-grade polish on the outer face, and recoat every few years.
Monsoon humidity makes wooden doors swell slightly. Leave a small gap at the bottom and sides when fitting, and check the door closes freely in July before you blame the carpenter.
If your home is in an area with termite history, treat the frame and the wall around it before fixing the door.
Vastu and the main door
Many families in Bangalore prefer an east or north-facing main entrance, a door that opens inward and clockwise, and a threshold at the doorway. If these matter to you, tell your designer at the start, because they affect the foyer layout and the way the door swings.
What a main door costs in Bangalore
In 2026, a laminate or veneer flush door with a hardwood frame costs about Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000. An engineered door with a teak veneer and grooved design costs Rs 35,000 to Rs 80,000. A solid teak door with frame and carving costs Rs 70,000 to Rs 2 lakh or more, depending on size and detail.
A digital lock adds Rs 12,000 to Rs 35,000. Polishing, hardware and installation add another Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000.
