Bedroom doors are rarely the first thing anyone thinks about in an interior project. Builders in Bangalore usually hand over flats with plain painted flush doors, and many families keep them, then wonder why the doors look tired next to a new wardrobe, rattle in the wind or let every sound from the living room into the bedroom.
A good bedroom door closes quietly, keeps out noise and light, stands up to humidity without swelling, and matches the rest of the room. It is not an expensive upgrade, and it is one of the few that you touch many times a day.
Here are bedroom door designs that suit Indian homes, with materials, sizes, colours and costs.
Standard bedroom door sizes
Most bedroom doors in Indian homes are about 2.75 to 3 feet wide and 7 feet high (about 810 to 900 mm by 2,100 mm). Slightly wider doors of 3 feet make it easier to move furniture in and out.
Door thickness is usually 30 to 35 mm for bedroom doors. Thicker, solid-core doors feel more substantial and block more sound.
The frame, also called the chaukhat, holds the hinges and the lock. A hardwood or WPC frame of good section is the base of a door that stays straight.
Types of bedroom doors
Flush doors have a flat, smooth face on both sides, with a core of wood strips or blockboard inside and plywood skins outside. They are the most common type in Indian apartments. Choose solid-core flush doors in BWR grade or better; hollow-core doors are cheaper but weak and noisy.
Laminated flush doors have a decorative laminate pressed onto both faces. They are durable, easy to clean and available in wood grains, solid colours and textures. Laminating both sides keeps the door balanced so it does not warp.
Veneer doors have a thin layer of real wood on the face, finished with polish or PU. They look warm and natural and cost more than laminate.
Panel doors have a frame with raised or recessed panels, in solid wood or moulded MDF. They suit traditional and classic interiors.
Membrane doors use PVC foil vacuum-pressed onto shaped MDF, allowing panel designs at a lower cost than solid wood.
Sliding and pocket doors slide along the wall or into a cavity in the wall. They save swing space in tight bedrooms and walk-in wardrobes, but block less sound than a swing door.
Bedroom door design ideas
A plain flush door in a matte laminate with a slim, full-height handle gives a clean, modern look and suits most apartments.
A door with horizontal or vertical grooves, cut into veneer or painted MDF, adds detail without clutter.
A door in the same finish as the wardrobe or wall panelling makes it blend into the room, which suits small bedrooms.
A contrasting door, in a deep colour such as navy, olive or charcoal, makes a statement in a corridor of white walls.
A door with a narrow strip of fluted glass lets some light into a dark passage while keeping privacy.
A flush door with brass or black metal inlay strips suits modern homes looking for a little detail.
Door colour combinations
White or off-white doors with wood-grain frames suit almost every home and make corridors feel brighter.
Wood-grain doors with white walls give warmth, especially in homes with wooden flooring or furniture.
Doors painted the same colour as the walls nearly disappear, which suits small flats with many doors along one corridor.
A dark door with a light wall, such as charcoal on warm white, gives contrast and hides fingerprints.
Keep all bedroom doors in one corridor the same colour, or at most two related tones, so the passage looks calm.
Plan doors, stairs and the facade together.
Soundproofing and privacy
Solid-core doors block much more sound than hollow ones. Add rubber gaskets along the frame and a drop seal at the bottom, which lowers automatically when the door closes, to block sound and light from the corridor.
A privacy lock with a turn knob inside and an emergency release outside suits children's rooms and bathrooms.
Humidity and Bangalore weather
In the monsoon months, wooden and plywood doors absorb moisture and swell slightly. A door that closes perfectly in March may stick in August. Leave a small even gap around the door, use BWR or BWP grade boards, seal all edges including the top and bottom, and laminate or polish both faces.
In older homes with termite history, treat the frame and the wall around it before fitting a new door, or use WPC frames.
Hardware
Use three good-quality hinges on each bedroom door. A mortise lock with a lever handle is more durable than a cylindrical knob lock.
Add a door stopper or a magnetic catch so the handle does not hit the wall, and soft-close door closers if you want quiet doors in a home with young children.
