A staircase railing has a simple job: stop people falling and give them something to hold. Yet it is often the part of the stair that decides how the whole space looks. A glass railing makes a duplex feel open and modern, a wooden railing makes it warm, and a laser-cut metal railing makes it a feature.
The design has to start with safety. Indian homes are often shared by small children and older parents, and a railing that is too low, too open or too slippery to grip is a real hazard. Here are railing designs that look good and stay safe, with costs.
Safety rules first
Railing height on the stairs should be about 3 feet (900 mm), measured from the front edge of the step. On landings and open edges, such as a balcony overlooking a double-height living room, go to about 3.5 feet (1,050 mm) or more.
Keep gaps between balusters, bars or panels under 4 inches (100 mm), so a small child cannot squeeze through.
Avoid horizontal bars that a child can use as a ladder, especially on landings and upper-floor edges.
The handrail should be easy to grip all the way along, ideally round or oval and about 1.5 to 2 inches across. A wide flat top looks neat but is hard to hold.
Fix the railing into the concrete structure, not into the finish or the tiles. A railing that moves when you lean on it is not safe.
Glass railings
Glass railings give an open, modern look and let light through, which makes them popular in duplexes and villas. Use toughened laminated glass, typically 12 mm or thicker, so if it breaks it holds together.
Glass can be held by stainless steel spigots (clamps at the base), a channel set into the floor or the side of the stair, or point fixings through the glass. Channel systems give the cleanest look.
Add a handrail on top of the glass or on the wall side, since smooth glass alone is hard to hold.
Glass shows fingerprints and dust. Plan for regular cleaning, especially in homes with children.
Stainless steel railings
Stainless steel railings, in SS 304 grade, are rust-free and durable. They come as balusters with a top rail, as cable or rod infill, or combined with glass.
A brushed or satin finish shows fewer fingerprints than mirror polish. Avoid SS 202 in Bangalore's humid months, as it can develop rust spots.
Mild steel railings
Mild steel (MS) railings are strong, affordable and can be fabricated in any design: vertical bars, laser-cut panels, geometric patterns or traditional motifs. They need galvanising or a good primer and powder coating to prevent rust.
Black or charcoal powder-coated MS railings with a wooden handrail are one of the most popular combinations in modern Indian homes.
Wooden railings
Wooden balusters and handrails suit traditional and warm modern interiors. Teak, sal and other hardwoods last well with polish. Turned balusters suit classic homes, and square or flat balusters suit modern ones.
A wooden handrail on a metal or glass railing gives warmth to the hand without the maintenance of a full wooden railing.
Plan doors, stairs and the facade together.
Other railing ideas
Cable railings use thin stainless steel cables stretched between posts. They look light, but horizontal cables can be climbed, so they are not ideal for homes with small children unless the cables run vertically.
Jali and laser-cut panels in metal or MDF give privacy and a strong pattern. Keep openings small for safety.
A solid half wall with a handrail on top suits dog-leg staircases in compact houses and gives a place for wall lights.
Matching the railing to the home
Repeat the railing material elsewhere: the same metal finish on balcony railings, window grills and the gate, or the same wood as the doors and floor.
For a double-height space, a glass railing on the upper landing keeps the view open from below, while a metal or wooden railing on the stairs adds a strong line.
Railings for older family members and children
Older family members rely on the handrail on every step. A continuous handrail on both sides of the stair, including around the landing, is far safer than a rail on one side that stops at the turn. Extend the handrail about a foot beyond the top and bottom steps, so there is something to hold before the first step.
For small children, a second handrail at about 2 feet high helps them climb on their own, and a safety gate at the top of the stair is useful until they are steady.
A warm-feeling handrail, in wood or with a wooden cap on metal, is more comfortable to grip than cold steel in the early morning.
What staircase railings cost in Bangalore
In 2026, MS railings with powder coating cost about Rs 600 to Rs 1,500 per running foot, depending on design. SS 304 railings cost about Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,500 per running foot. Glass railings with SS fittings cost about Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,500 per running foot. Wooden railings cost about Rs 1,500 to Rs 4,000 per running foot depending on the wood and design.
A typical dog-leg staircase in an independent house has 25 to 35 running feet of railing, including landings.
Mistakes to avoid
Choosing a railing for looks with gaps too wide for children is the most common. Check the gap before you approve the design.
Skipping the handrail on glass railings is the second. Glass alone is hard to grip.
Using MS without galvanising or proper coating is the third. Rust appears at welds within a year or two.
