A few years ago, almost every Indian kitchen and wardrobe was built from plywood. Today, many quotes list HDHMR instead, especially for shutters and in factory-made modular furniture. Vendors describe it as stronger, more moisture-resistant and termite-proof, and homeowners are left wondering whether it is an upgrade or a cheaper substitute.
The honest answer is that HDHMR is very good at some jobs and plywood is better at others. Here is how they compare and where each belongs in a home.
What HDHMR is
HDHMR stands for high density high moisture resistance board. It is made from wood fibres mixed with resin and pressed under high pressure and heat into a dense, uniform sheet.
It is a heavier, denser and more moisture-resistant relative of MDF (medium density fibreboard). Where MDF has a density of roughly 650 to 750 kg per cubic metre, HDHMR is typically around 850 kg per cubic metre or more.
Because it has no grain and no internal gaps, it machines very cleanly, which is why it is popular for CNC-cut designs, profiled shutters and painted finishes.
What plywood is
Plywood is made of thin wood veneers glued together with their grain at right angles. The cross-layering makes it strong in both directions and gives it good screw-holding.
Plywood comes in grades by water resistance: MR for dry areas, BWR for higher moisture, and BWP and marine plywood for wet areas.
Strength and screw holding
Plywood generally holds screws better, especially in the edges, and handles repeated assembly and disassembly better. It is also lighter for the same thickness.
HDHMR holds screws well on its faces, but edge screws need care. Repeatedly removing and refitting screws in the same hole can weaken it.
For load-bearing parts such as long shelves, bed frames and carcass sides carrying heavy loads, good plywood is usually the safer choice.
Moisture resistance
HDHMR resists humidity much better than MDF and many MR-grade plywoods. It stays flat and does not delaminate, because it has no layers to separate.
Under direct water, such as a leaking sink trap, BWP or marine plywood still performs better. That is why many designers, including us, do not use HDHMR for the sink base, even when it is used elsewhere in the kitchen.
Both need sealed edges. Water entering an unsealed edge damages any board.
Termites
HDHMR is often marketed as termite-resistant, thanks to treatments in the resin. Treated plywood is also available. In areas of Bangalore with termite history, such as older layouts and houses near gardens, ask for termite treatment on whichever board is used, and treat the wall behind built-in furniture too.
Finish and appearance
HDHMR gives a very smooth, flat surface. It is ideal for painted (PU or duco) shutters, membrane shutters, CNC grooves and jali, and handleless profiles.
Plywood with laminate is the most common finish for carcasses and shutters. Its surface is good but can show slight unevenness under high-gloss finishes.
Pick finishes that suit Bangalore's weather.
Weight
HDHMR is heavier than plywood of the same thickness. Large HDHMR shutters need strong hinges, and very tall shutters may need more hinges than plywood ones.
Where to use each in a home
Use BWP or marine plywood for the kitchen sink base and units around it, bathroom vanities, and any carcass that might get wet.
Use BWR plywood or HDHMR for kitchen wall and tall units, wardrobes, TV units and other furniture in normal indoor conditions.
Use HDHMR for shutters that will be painted, grooved, profiled or CNC-cut, and for flat, stable doors on wardrobes.
Use plywood for long shelves, bed frames and anything that carries heavy loads or will be dismantled and reassembled.
HDHMR in Bangalore's climate
Bangalore is mild most of the year but humid through the long monsoon. Furniture on external walls, in rooms next to bathrooms and in ground-floor flats absorbs more moisture than furniture in an upper-floor bedroom. HDHMR handles this humidity well and stays flat, which is why it suits large wardrobe shutters that might bow if made from lower-grade plywood.
Where the risk is direct water, rather than humidity, plywood rated BWP still wins.
Cost
In 2026, HDHMR costs about Rs 95 to Rs 160 per sq ft depending on thickness and brand, which is similar to BWR plywood. BWP and marine plywood cost about Rs 130 to Rs 220 per sq ft.
The board is a small part of the total cost of a kitchen or wardrobe. Choosing the right board for each part matters more than choosing the cheapest overall.
HDHMR, MDF and particle board
MDF is lighter and cheaper than HDHMR and machines well, but it absorbs moisture more easily and is best kept to dry rooms, such as painted shutters on bedroom wardrobes.
Particle board, made from wood chips bonded with resin, is the cheapest board. It is common in flat-pack furniture. It swells quickly if wet and holds screws poorly, so it is not a good choice for built-in kitchens or wardrobes in Bangalore homes.
HDHMR sits above both in density and moisture resistance, which is why it is now widely used for shutters in modular furniture.
How to read a quote
A good quote names the board for each part: carcass, shutters, shelves and backs, with grade, thickness and brand. If a quote only says "HDHMR" or "plywood" for everything, ask what is used in the sink unit specifically.
Mistakes to avoid
Using HDHMR or MR plywood under the sink to save a little money is the most common. That is where water damage starts.
Choosing heavy HDHMR shutters without upgrading the hinges is the second. They sag over time.
Leaving edges unsealed is the third, for any board.
